I am a designer and developer and have been building the internet professionally for over a decade. I care deeply about users and creating better experiences for them.
For the past 4 years I’ve worked as a designer, developer and project manager at the World Company of Lawrence, KS, birthplace of Django. Where I tend to and oversee our collection of award winning news sites.
I architected, designed and built out KUSports.com the World Company’s site focused on sports at the University of Kansas. I worked with our fantastic content team to create a site that serves our fans and has withstood the test of time.
This design has been our most successful product in every measurable way. Use and engagement have been steadily rising, it has won both an EPpy and an APSE award for best sports website.
In my time at the World Company I have been involved with all aspects of every one of our online products. I’ve worked with journalists and developers on data visualization and editorial projects. I’ve led design projects and solved day to day problems on deadline.
I’ve managed a team of up to 7 people; successfully mentoring both designers and developers, helping them improve and become effective in our large complex system. Since moving to management, our team has fostered better relationships with all departments of the company and have shipped more projects on time with less stress than ever before.
I also led all development aspects of our first ever community-driven niche news website from inception to completion.
I have 4.5 years experience with Django and have built everything from pluggable apps to a full custom extensible CMS with polymorphic objects for cbcjonesville.org. My Github has a number of my projects including django_compressor, typogrify & django_inlines.
At the World Company I was the lead dev for a number of Django apps and libraries; a couple of these: OrderField (for sorting, traversing and in-admin reordering of objects) and GenericGlue (a collection of tools to take the pain out of GFK relationships) are open source pending. I built a preroll advertising and video playlist system using Javascript, Python and Action Script.
As part of the Pragmatic Badger collective I’ve done art, design and concept work on our projects such as Forkinit, the DjangoDash and other upcoming bits of awesome.
I even get away with some programming when my fellow badgers let me.
